“One of the things that puzzles me is that so few people want to look at life as a totality and to recognize that death is no more extraordinary than birth. When they say it’s the end of everything they don’t seem to recognize that we came from somewhere and it would be very, very strange indeed to suppose that we’re not going somewhere.” — from Conversations with Robertson Davies
It’s here! August 28, 1913 was the birth date of Canadian author Robertson Davies, so I’ve designated this weekend to celebrate his many wonderful works.
If you’ve read and posted about any of them, please leave a comment here, or otherwise notify me, and I’ll do a wrap-up on Tuesday. My own post about The Cunning Man will be published on Sunday.
See you in the reading nook!
I’ve posted a review of Tempest-Tost today at https://wp.me/s2oNj1-tost for this weekend event; after the Deptford Trilogy it was not quite what I’d expected but no less enjoyable for that! Looking forward now to other posts from other aficionados. 🙂

Thanks again for the lovely post Chris! It seems pretty quiet around here, so I don’t know how many participants there will be, but we will have enjoyed ourselves anyhow.

Thank you for organizing this! I love Davies and will enjoy reading the posts. (His birthday comes at the busiest time of the semester for me, so although I always think it would be fun to participate, I never end up having the time.)

Yes, I think it’s an inconvenient time for many. Not something that Davies considered when selecting his birthday. However, any time of year is a good time to read and post about RD, so if you are ever moved to do so I shall be delighted to see what you come up with.

Sneaking in just under the wire for this weekend, I reviewed The Rebel Angels. I enjoyed it very much! It felt edgier than Fifth Business; I think it won’t be for everyone as it’s fairly explicit in places. Not for the squeamish, but luckily that’s not me — I liked the scatological aspect.

Yes, I know what you mean … it was a bit on the edge for me at times. Still a great read. Thanks so much for your review.

Thank you so much for hosting this, Lory. I’m a little late, I hope that’s okay. I’m posting some reflections on my reading of Robertson Davies this morning, https://cathum.wordpress.com/2020/08/31/why-robertson-davies/ . Thank you for sending me back to him.
