This is a meme started by Simon of Stuck in a Book. He picked his favorite book, author, song, film and object starting with a randomly-chosen letter, and said he would assign a letter to anybody responding in the comments who wanted to do the same.
I responded, and got assigned…Z. Ouch. He took pity on me and assigned me O as a second choice. Also not so common! However, I was surprised that it wasn’t too difficult for me to find good options.
Since I’m currently reading this to my son, I didn’t seek any further. (Plus, it has O and Z in it!) One of the best of the Oz books, exciting, funny, and without too many puns.
I was skeptical about the Aubrey/Maturin books for a long time, wondering how a series about life in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars could possibly be so interesting, but once I started reading I was hooked. (Although I admit to skimming through the battle scenes.)
This was another one that I didn’t have to go far to find, since I just sang it in a concert. Glorious, melancholy Renaissance polyphony.
There are other great “O” movies, including other musicals (Oliver! and On the Town) but this is the one I grew up watching. Plus, my mom was born in Oklahoma, so it deserves a nod.
I love my Christmas tree ornaments, which remind me of my childhood. My parents gave us one every year, marked with the date — since there were five of us kids, our tree got quite full, but nobody’s favorites could be left out.
Here is Simon’s round-up of the respondents to his original post.
Great job! I agree about melancholy Renaissance music. It gives me chills every time I listen to /sing it.
And there are lots of motets that begin with O, but this is the one I happened to have in my head.
I love that you picked Ozma of Oz for you 'O' book. I should have thought of that for mine…it's my favorite Oz book. (Tik-Tok of Oz is a VERY close second.) Great post!
Nice to meet another Oz fan!
I read them like crazy as a kid; after all, there's no place like Oz. 🙂
Love the O Vos Omnes! What fun to find another choral person out there in book blogging land.
